Here are some historical highlights from 1973

Britain, Ireland, and Denmark joined the European Economic Community — the future European Union, and later that month the Paris Peace Accords were signed, beginning a ceasefire in Vietnam.

Major news that year included the launch of Skylab, the UK-Iceland "Cod War," Secretariat winning horse racing's Triple Crown, the opening of the Sydney Opera House, the Yom Kippur War and oil embargo, the Watergate hearings, and the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade ruling.

Inflation hit hard that year, with the UK rate near 8.4% and the US near 6.16%, driven partly by OPEC's oil restrictions tied to the Yom Kippur War.

On the big screen, "American Graffiti" premiered in August, directed by George Lucas and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, and Candy Clark — a coming-of-age story a lot of you may have related to at the time.

Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in the televised "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match in September.
